My first teaching job was in Tuktoyaktuk – the very top of Canada in the Arctic Circle. I used to take my students to the computer, not only to get them using computers but also because there was only about 2 hours of sunlight per day and the computer lab had windows where I could get some of that sun. In 2000 one the favourite things for my teenage students was to Instant Message with students, particularly in New York for some reason. I remember thinking how amazing this was that teens up in the frozen Arctic tundra of the Canadian north were connecting with students in one of the biggest cities in the world. Sitting beside that sunny window in Tuktoyaktuk I saw first-hand how technology could connect students to the world.
